AMD promises 16 core cpu for 2012 (the inquirer)

in the meantime I will stick to Intel,
that's a choice...just read a minute ago
that AMD almost acquired NVidia in 2005.
ATI would have remained ATI; just hope they
don't drop the logo! At least we can expect that
AMD will stick to it's promise of making new ATI cards
available in big quantity at release time...

Wow 16 cores, amazing... But will the average PC user need that many cores?!?

I wonder what this will mean for the people who bought their PC's in early 2006 when Dual Core was new and Solo cores were the most purchased. Will software in the next 5 years change and only run on multiple core processors?
